  2. WHAT IS GLAUCOMA? Eyeisaverysensitiveorganofthehuman bodythatoveraperiodoftimedevelops variouscomplications. Onesuchconditionis knownasGlaucoma. Itarisesduetothe damageoftheopticnerve – thenervethat sendsvisualsignalstothebrainfromthe retina. Althoughtheexactreasonforglaucomais unknown, itisbelievedthatthedeterioration ofopticnerveleadstoblindspotsinthevisual areaoftheeyeeventuallyleadingto glaucomaandfurthertovisionloss. The deteriorationintheopticnervemaybea resultoftheelevatedpressureintheeyes.

  3. Glaucomaalthoughobservedinpeopleaged above60, itisgeneticallytransferredand hence, withageandhistory, riskassociated withthisconditionincreases. Readonfurthertoknowindetailabout glaucomaandwhyitiscalledthesilentvision killer ! CAUSES OF GLAUCOMA Doctorsanalyzetheproblemrelatedwith glaucomaas, aresultofhigheyepressure. The eyepressuremightbeduetothe accumulationofexcessfluid (aqueoushumor) thathasn’tfounditswaytodrainout. Theaqueoushumorisaninternalfluidthat flowsthroughouttheeyeandgenerallytakes anexitthroughatissuecalledthe “trabecular meshwork”. Atastagewherethisfluid excessivelybuildsuporthedrainageisn’table toputitoutatthenormalrate, thepressure ontheeyeincreases.

  4. Insomecases, theopticnervesarevery sensitivetoholdthenormaleyepressure. Riskofglaucomaincreasesinsuchpeople andonlyaregulareyecheckupcanhelp identifythesignsofdamagetotheoptic nerve. GLAUCOMA TYPES AND SYMPTOMS Glaucomaisclassifiedintotwogroups dependingonitsstage, symptoms: 1. PrimaryOpen-angleglaucoma 2. Angle-closureglaucoma

  5. PRIMARY OPEN-ANGLE GLAUCOMA Thisisthemostcommontypeofglaucoma seen, wherethereisnopainorvisionchanges initially. Itoccurswhenthereisanuprisein theeyepressureduetotheexcessfluid, which isnotdrainedoutoftheeyesashappensin normalcases. Primaryopen-angleglaucomadoesn’tshow anysymptomsinitially. Asthedisease advances, followingsymptomsmightbe observed –Graduallossofperipheralvision, usuallyin botheyesTunnelvisionintheadvancedstages – lossintheedgesofthevision / narrowvision.

ANGLE-CLOSURE GLAUCOMA Angle-closureglaucoma, alsocalledthe – narrow-angleglaucoma / closed-angle glaucomaisanadvancedstagewhich happenswhentheirisoftheeyeisveryclose tothedrainageangleintheeye, thusblocking thedrainage. Thisleadstoincreasedeye pressureresultinginan “acuteattack“, an emergencysituationthatneedsimmediate medicalassistance. Farsightednessandcataractsmayalsoleadto increasedeyepressureandhencecause blockage.

Thistypeofglaucomashowsupthe followingsymptoms – Eyeredness Eyepain Severeheadache Nauseaandvomiting Blurredvision Acuteangle-closureglaucoma Lossofperipheralvision / central vision,blindspotsonthesides, frequently inbotheyes. Halosaroundlights NORMAL-TENSION GLAUCOMA Inthiscase, theeyepressureremainsnormal buttheopticnerveisdamagedforreasons unknown. Itmaybeduetolackofbloodflow orsomeotherreason.

  8. CONGENITAL GLAUCOMA Thisisarareconditionusuallyseeninbabies andmaybeinherited. Whenthereisincorrect orincompletedevelopmentoftheeye’s drainagecanalsduringtheprenatalperiod, thisconditionisobserved. Secondaryglaucoma, Pigmentaryglaucoma, Neovascularglaucoma, traumaticglaucoma andetcareotherglaucomavariations.

RISK FACTORS OF GLAUCOMA: Followingaretheriskfactorsofglaucomaand suchconditionsareathigherriskof developingglaucoma – Agedabove40 Haveafamilyhistoryofglaucoma HavevisionproblemsHavediabetes / high bloodpressure Consumptionofsteroidmedicationsfora longtime Previousinjurytoeyes Havecongenitalissueslikethincorneaor damagedopticnerve Haveheartdisease, diabetes, orsicklecell anemia Havehigheyepressure Shortsightedorlongsightedproblems
