GENG 1803: First Year Engineering Course Course Objectives • Designed to introduce students to the scope and practice of professional engineering and the role it plays in today's society. • Emphasis is placed on developing a range of technical, information literacy and report writing skills and innovative thinking to find solutions to social needs within a sustainable framework. • Teamwork and project management skills are also developed, and applied in a group design project. 1. 1. GENG 1803: Information Literacy component prior to 2005 • Development of information literacy and academic integrity skills have been a component of the subject for a number of years. • Information Literacy component worth 10% of overall course mark. • With a variety of approaches and assessment tasks supported by library workshops, learning materials delivered via Blackboard, and online discussions. Issues • Information literacy sessions and related assessment task placed emphasis on lower order thinking and information seeking behaviours, rather than information using behaviours. • Assessment task disjointed from other course assessment items. • Need for greater focus on principles related to academic integrity.
