  1. NYS Math Module 1 Lesson 15 I will be able to: multiply by exponents 5.NBT.2 find the quotient 5.NBT.7 Objective: Divide decimals using place value understanding, including remainders in the smallest unit.

  2. Sprint – Multiply by Exponents **8 minutes** On your mark, get set, GO!

  3. Find the Quotient 0.48 ÷ 2 = ______ 0.24 On your place value chart, draw 48 hundredths in number disks. Now solve this problem. 2 4 24 48 hundredths ÷ 2 = ___ hundredths = ___ tenths____hundredths 2 4 0. 2 0.48 Now solve using an algorithm. - 0 4 08 - 8 0

  4. Solve using an algorithm. 96 tenths ÷ 8 = ______ 1.2 1.2 9.6 8 - 8 16 - 16 0

  5. Illustrate on a place value chart. Now solve it. 0.14 0.42 ÷ 3 = ______ 1 4 14 42 hundredths ÷ 3 = ___ hundredths = ___ tenths____hundredths

  6. 3.52 ÷ 2 = ______ 1.76

  7. Word Problem Jose bought a bag of 6 oranges for $2.82. He also bought 5 pineapples. He gave the cashier $20 and received $1.43 change. What did each pineapple cost. 3.15 15.75 5 • $18.57 • - 2.82 • $15.75 • $20.00 • 1.43 • $18.57 - 15 07 - 05 $3.15 ea. 25

  8. Concept Development 1.7 ÷ 2 = ______ On your place value chart, show 1.7 by drawing number disks. no Let’s begin with our largest units. Can 1 be divided into 2 groups? zero How many ones does each group get? By exchanging the one for 10 tenths. How can we keep sharing? Draw the exchange on your boards. How many tenths do we have? 17 tenths

  9. 0.85 2 1.7 0 - 1 6 0 1 - 10 0 17 tenths divided by 2. How many tenths can we share with each group? 8 one How many tenths are left over? How can we keep sharing? By exchanging one tenth for 10 hundredths. Draw the exchange on your boards. How many hundredths do we have? 10 hundredths yes Can we share 10 hundredths evenly?

  10. What is the difference between these two problems different? 1.7 1.7 ÷ 2 = 0.85 6.72 ÷ 4 = 1.68 0.85 2 1.7 0 1.7 6.72 1. 6 8 - - 1 6 4 We added a 0 to keep sharing. 0 1 4 - - 10 7 2 0 3 24 2 Discuss with a partner. 32 0 One problem is divided by 4 and the other by 2. One has the dividend to the hundredths and the other to the tenths. For today’s problem, we had to think of 7 tenths as 70 hundredths.

  11. Solve this problem using an algorithm, while I record on a place value chart. 2.6 ÷ 4 = _____ 0.65 2.60 0. 6 5 - 4 0 - 6 2 2 24 0 20 0 First, I illustrate my problem on a place value chart. You write your problem using an algorithm. Since we can’t share 2 ones, we regroup adding 20 tenths to the tenths. We share or divide 26 tenths by 4. So each group gets 6 tenths. We regroup the remaining 2 tenths. We divide 20 hundredths by 4. Each group gets 5 hundredths. Our answer is 0.65.

  12. 17 ÷ 4 = ______ 4.25 What do you notice? Share with a partner. Divide. We have a remainder. In 4th grade we recorded this as r1. What have we done today that lets us keep sharing? We regroup. We exchange ones for tenths and tenths for hundredths. Solve this problem with a partner. One of you solve using an algorithm and the other using a place value chart. 04.25 Add zeros. 0 4 17 .0 - 16 1 0 - 8 2 0

  13. 7.7 ÷ 4 = ______ 1.925 Solve. - 8 1.925 20 00 .7 4 7 - 20 - 4 0 3 7 - 3 6 1 0

  14. 0.84 ÷ 4 = ______ 0.21 Solve. 0.21 0.84 4 - 0 8 04 - 04 0
