Acting • Every group has four equal sized bags (A,B,C,D) with different amounts of base-10 blocks in them. • Estimate which bag has the most and least number represented by base 10 blocks. • Remove the blocks and determine the number of each bag. • Order from least to greatest. • Discussion – were your estimates correct?
Representing • On your grid paper, represent the number 685 • Now draw 648 • Compare both numbers you have drawn. • Which is bigger? How do you know from the drawing?
Example The objective is to have students begin to compare and eliminate similarities between the two shaded grids. Starting at the flats, rods then units in their comparison. As show on the next slide
Symbolising • Give students two different number. Example 798 and 762. • Ask students to compare the numbers and determine which is bigger • After mastering the grid shading, students will be able to just use the numbers to compare which is greater/least. • If students are still having trouble they can use the grid to compare the numbers.
Formalising • The formalising stage will not look much different in this topic. • However, students will no longer need to create a picture or won’t even think about pictures in their heads. • Once they have a clear understanding in the symbolising stage you can challenge students by asking, “Could you think of two numbers that would be hard to compare?” • Students will realize that they can compare numbers far beyond 1000
