  2. Battle at Little Bighorn • This battle was fought on June 25th, 1876 near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory. • It was fought between federal troops led by Lt. Colonel George Armstrong Custer and Indians led by Sitting Bull.

  3. Causes • The cause of the Battle at Little Bighorn was Indian tribes missing a federal deadline to move to reservations. This made the U.S. Army dispatched to confront them.

  5. Details About the Battle • This battle was the greatest Indian victory and the worst U.S. Army defeat in the long Plains Indian War. • It is known as the most famous of all contacts between the Indians and the Americans. • Custer drew near the camp and decided to press on ahead rather than wait for reinforcements.

  6. Custer’s Last Stand • Custer did not expect the amount of Indian soldiers that were fighting against them. • Every man in Custer’s 7th Calvary was killed in battle. • This event was known as Custer’s Last Stand.

Impact • The slaughter of Custer and his men outraged many white Americans and confirmed their image of the Indians as wild and bloodthirsty. • It made whites more aware of the power that the Indians had. • It made the U.S. government increase its efforts to subdue the tribes. • The United States crushed the spirit of the Indian.

  8. Impact on Western Settlement • This battle denied the entire premise of Manifest Destiny. • Due to the Indians defeating the Americans, the entire religious basis for the settlement of the west was challenged.
