Characteristics of domains, kingdoms, and classes discussed in class
Domain archea • Single celled • no membrane bound nucleus (prokaryotes) • Heterotroph/ few autotrophs • found in extreme environments
Domain Monera or bacteria • Single celled • Prokaryote ( no membrane bound nucleus) • Heterotroph/ few autotrophs • Have peptidoglycan in cell membrane • Examples • Strep throat, E coli, Salmonella
Domain Eukarya • Single or multicelled • Have membrane bound nucleus • Heterotrophs or autotrophs • Includes the following kingdoms • Plants • Animals • Fungi • protists
Kingdom Plantae • Multicellular • Autotrophs (have chlorophyll and are green) • Have cell walls • Two main groups • Vascular plants- trees, flowers • Nonvascular plants – moss, liverworts
Kingdom Fungi • Multicellular • Heterotrophs • Responsible for decomposition and recycling of nutrients back to soil. • Yeast, mushrooms, rusts, fruit molds • Penicillin comes from fruit molds
Kingdom Protista • These organisms do not fit in the other kingdoms of domain eukarya • They can be single or multicelled • Autotrophs or heterotrophs • Groups • Plant like – algae • Animal like – amoeba, plankton • Fungi like – slimey mildew, downy mildew
Kingdom Animalia • Multicellular • Heterotrophs • Includes invertebrates- corals, sponges, worms, insects, clams, spiders • Phylum chordata • Backbone and spine • Birds, reptiles, amphibians, mammals, fish
Class Aves (birds) • Feathers • Endotherm (warm blooded) • Hollow flight skeleton • Descended from dinosaurs • Lay eggs
Class reptilia • Dry scaly skin • Lay eggs (most) • Ectotherm (cold blooded) • Three chambered heart
Class amphibian • Smooth slimy skin • Ectotherm (cold blooded) • Breathe through skin • Have a aquatic life stage (gills) • Undergo metamorphosis • Have a land life stage (lungs)
Class Pisces (fish) • Paired Fins • Jaws • Gills for gas exchange (most do not have lungs) • May have a swim bladder for bouyancy • Most are ectothermic (coldblooded) • May lay eggs or give live birth
Class mammal • Have Hair/ fur • Endothermic (warm blooded) • Females make milk for young • Breathe air • Four chambered heart • Most give live birth with the exception of platypus and echidna which lay eggs
