  2. I. Jehu’s Dynasty • A. An interesting tale • 1. Read 2 Kings 13:20-21 and answer these questions together: • a. Why does the Bible record this story? • To illustrate the condition of Israel • b. What could Elisha’s bones represent? • Obedience to God’s word (and that it was dead!) • c. What does the dead man in the story represent? • Israel itself is spiritually, socially, and politically dead

  3. Jehu’s Dynasty • 1. His dynasty exhibited some traitsof faith, which God blessed. However, after God rescued and restoredthem, they slipped into a self-centeredlifestyle. • C. What do you think the climate in Israel was like after Jehu’s drastic measures? • Probably chaotic with so many government officials had been killed • D. What happened to the treaty with Judah? With Phoenicia? • With the death of King Ahaziah, the treaty with Judah was dead • With the death of Jezebel, the treaty with Phoenicia was dead

  4. E. A New Sherriff in Town • 1. When King Hazaelof Aram attacked, there was no one to helpIsrael. Under Jehu’s son Jehoahaz, Israel nearly lost its identity as a nation. • 2. Aram now controlled traderoutes through Israel, and charged tolls for passing through. They also demanded a large tribute, which further weakened Israel’s economy.

  5. F. A Turn Back • 1. Jehoahaz began to call on God torescue Israel. God used the Assyriansto deliver them. Luckily, the Assyrians didn’t extend their march to Israel. • 2. Under Jeroboam II, Israel regained the territory the Arameans had taken, and Israel became almost as big and powerful as it had during Solomon’s reign. • 3. With this new period of peace and prosperity, faith in God withered and died within a few years, and Israel descended into chaos.

Why were these men allowed to be kings of Israel? • Because God had promised Jehu that his house would be punished for his wrongdoing, and this punishment was that Israel would come to an end • 2. What do ALL the following kings have in common? (at least 2 things) • Continued in the sins of Jeroboam • God used them for His purpose • How do you think this will effect the nation of Israel? • God’s promise will come true!
