Monarchy • All monarchs gain power through heredity • Types • Absolute – sole control over government • People have few or no rights • Limited – power limited by a constitution and/or parliament • Figureheads with no real power • Divine right – belief that monarch was put on throne by God • Titles – king/queen, emperor/empress, czar/czarina

  3. Dictatorship • Usually comes to power through military force • Has absolute power • No clear successor when removed from power • People have few or no rights • Oligarchy – like a dictator except a small group rules instead of a single person

  4. Democracy • Government by the people • Types • Direct – the people directly vote on all matters • Representative (indirect) – the people elect representatives to make decisions for them • Power is limited by the constitution and regular elections
