Paraphrasing vs. Summarizing Jenny is a fifteen year old student who attends a rural school. She is very outgoing and participates in school activities such as cheerleading and Quiz Bowl. 7 Steps to Effective Paraphrasing • Read and reread the original passage until you understand its full meaning. • Underline the key words or phrase that you need to interpret. • Write down a few words below your selections that you could use to make a new phrase. • Rewrite the original passage in your own words using your notes. • Check your work with the original to make sure that your version accurately expresses all the essential information in a new form. • Use “quotation marks” to identify any unique term or phraseology you have borrowed exactly from the source. • Record the source.
