  2. The Regrettable Bargain Introduction • One of the saddest figures in the Bible is that of Esau. • Esau was a man who had his good side. • Yet on two occasions he was manipulated by his brother Jacob.

  3. The Regrettable Bargain • Esau Sold His Birthright. • Esau’s Birthright. • The physical advantages of the birthright. • The spiritual advantages of this particular birthright.

  4. The Regrettable Bargain • Esau’s Regrettable Bargain... • Esau chose the sensual over the spiritual.

  5. The Regrettable Bargain • 16See that no one is sexually immoral, or is godless like Esau, who for a single meal sold his inheritance rights as the oldest son. (Heb 12:16, NIV) • Esau chose the present over the future.

  6. The Regrettable Bargain • Could We Sell Our Birthright? • Our Birthright as Christians... • We are heirs according to the promise made to Abraham (Gal 3:29).

  7. The Regrettable Bargain • We are joint-heirs with Christ (Rom 8:16-17). • We are heirs according to the hope of eternal life (Titus 3:7). • 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7, NIV)

  8. The Regrettable Bargain • We are heirs of the kingdom which He has promised (Jam 2:5; cf. 2 Pet 1:11). • In Him, all things are ours (1 Cor 3:21-23; cf. Rev 21:7).

  9. The Regrettable Bargain • 7so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life. (Titus 3:7, NIV) • Our inheritance is incorruptible, undefiled, does not fade away, reserved in heaven (1 Pet 1:4).

  10. The Regrettable Bargain • Let’s not Make a Regrettable Bargain...? • How could that happen? • Giving in to the passing pleasures of sin.

  11. The Regrettable Bargain • 24By faith Moses, when he had grown up, refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter. • 25 He chose to be mistreated along with the people of God rather than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a short time. (Heb 11:24-25, NIV).

  12. The Regrettable Bargain • 26He regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as of greater value than the treasures of Egypt, because he was looking ahead to his reward. (Heb 11:26).

  13. The Regrettable Bargain • Lusting for things of the world (cf. James 4:4). • 15Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. (1 John 2:15, NIV)

  14. The Regrettable Bargain • Walking after the flesh rather than after the Spirit (cf. Galatians 5:16-26).

  15. The Regrettable Bargain • How might we hold on to our birthright? • Pursue peace and holiness. • Pursue is a power word. • 14Make every effort to live in peace with all men and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord. (Heb 12:14, NIV)

  16. The Regrettable Bargain • Be careful not to fall short of God’s grace. • 15 See to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many. (Heb 12:15, NIV)

  17. The Regrettable Bargain • Exercise discipline and godliness. • 24Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. (1 Cor 9:24, NIV)

  18. The Regrettable Bargain • 25Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever. (1 Cor 9:25, NIV)

  19. The Regrettable Bargain • 26Therefore I do not run like a man running aimlessly; I do not fight like a man beating the air. • 27No, I beat my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize. (1 Cor 9:26-27, NIV)

  20. The Regrettable Bargain Conclusion • 1As God’s fellow workers we urge you not to receive God’s grace in vain. • 2For he says, “In the time of my favor I heard you, and in the day of salvation I helped you.” I tell you, now is the time of God’s favor, now is the day of salvation. (2 Cor 6:1-2, NIV)
