  1. EMODNET pilot biological lot

  2. Partners & Networks • VLIZ : EurOBIS, ERMS, WoRMS, PESI • NIOO-CEME : MarBEF, MARS • MARIS & IFREMER : Seadatanet • GBIF • Bremen University: PANGAEA • ICES • Rutgers University: OBIS • IBSS • ESF-Marine Board (advisory) • IODE (advisory) • Many data providers to be identified

  3. Purpose • Build data system to provide biological data to EMODNET portal and other European initiatives • Data requirements • Functional requirements • Reporting requirements

  4. Data requirements • Data types: • Biogeography : species, position, time, • Concentration : eg Chlorophyl • Indices: eg. Biodiversity indices • Biological groups: • Mammals, Birds, Reptiles • Benthos, Phyto&Zoo-Plankton, … • No fisheries

  5. Data requirements • Prototype focus • North Sea + Gulf of Biscay + Iberian coast • Not complete but at least 3 species per group

  6. Functional requirements • Web data portal • Data freely available • Data made available in OGC compliant system ( WMS or WFS ) • Layers for European Atlas of the Sea, WISE-Marine, European Marine Habitats • Follows INSPIRE rules

  7. Reporting requirements • Regular reports • ‘Gap analysis’ • Lessons learned • Recommendations for final EMODNET portal • Collaboration with other lot’s

  8. EurOBIS for Emodnet • Data requirements: • Region: OK • Biological groups: most are there • Fit for purpose? -> scientific workshops • Data analysis & derived data -> scientific workshops • Functional requirements: • OGC compliant: ready • INSPIRE : to be done • Reporting requirements: • Recommendations from scientific workshops

  9. System overview

  10. Data standardisation • Species names => European/World register of marine species • Functional groups =>? WORMS • Location names => VLIZ/MarBEF Gazetteer • Sampling techniques metadata… • Seadatanet vocabularies • Format : OBIS schema; OGC

  11. EurOBIS - Seadatanet • Mikado tool will write ‘OBIS schema’ • Integration with physical-oceanographic & chemical data managed in Seadatanet • CDI records, EDMED entries … • Collaboration with chemical & hydrographic EMODNET lot’s.

  12. Plan • More after 12 may
