Quantifying the Effects of Land Use Change and Population on Water Quality Mark Dougherty Civil & Environmental Engineering Virginia Tech 26 October, 2001
Objectives • Quantify how changes in land use and population impact water quality in a watershed • Develop a methodology for estimating the impact of future land use and population on water quality
Plan of Attack • Relevant literature review • Consolidate available data • Investigate relationships with land use, population, and water quality • Calibrate/verify water quality model(s) • Develop future land use/population scenarios • Compare model predictions with statistical methods (trend, correlation, regression analyses)
Literature Review Topics • Previous studies in the basin • Water quality impacts of urbanizing areas • Land use analysis techniques • GIS and watershed analysis • Statistical analysis of water resources • Water quality models
Land Use Data • Aerial photography and DOQQ’s • Existing maps from regional agencies • Remotely sensed imagery • Products from RESAC or Univ. of MD • Data developed directly from acquired imagery
Proposed water quality parameters • BOD5 • Total suspended solids • Total phosphorus • Total Kjeldahl nitrogen • Ammonia nitrogen • Oxidized nitrogen
Issues and challenges with this research • Large quantities of data need to be summarized in a meaningful manner • Statistical analyses must account for spatial distribution of land uses within the watershed • Water quality data is available from only one monitoring station • Remotely sensed imagery or products may become costly
