CCCCO: CAREER ADVANCEMENT ACADEMIES • Establish pipelines to college and high wage careers for underemployed, underprepared young adults (target 18 –30 yrs) • CCCCO Demonstration project quickly reached large scale • Phase 1: 3 regions (East Bay, Central Valley, LA) 29 colleges • Phase 2: expanded to 4 regions in 2011-2012 • Serving > 8,700 students to date • SB70: $20 million investment (2007 – 2012) • Public/Private Partnership between CCCCO and philanthropy • Career Ladders Project: TA/support/coordination • Independent Evaluation (OMG) and attention to data • Leverage external investments and growing support • Course Success: 75% Retention: 90%

Growth Potential New emphasis on Electric Vehicles, hybrids and Fuel Cells Predictions in 2007 “A combined total of 22,000 vehicles a year” “that is a tenfold increase from the cars now on California’s roads” At industry ratio of 1 mechanic for each 200 vehicles, we would need an additional 115 EV technicians per year With current gas prices what are the 2012 predictions?

Program Overview Student population in ATT program • Most become technicians because they are not rocket scientists!!!! • Most will need some remedial training in basic skills to succeed • We have to make it an easy progression or they won’t try • Stackable credentials • Basic skills incorporated into technical program • To replace today’s aging technician staff we have two choices • Steal them or grow them– we prefer to grow them
