Warm Up On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being “extremely hard,” how hard do you think life was like for these three separate groups of people at the start of Reconstruction? -Plantation owners -Poor whites -Freedmen (former slaves)
Reconstruction 1865-1877
Main Goals Reconstruction was the federal government’s controversial effort to: Repair the damage to the South Reunite the Southern states to the Union
Plantation Owners • Lose their slaves • Have to pay workers to tend to their crops/fields
Plantation Owners, cont. • Land/property was often seized by the government • House/land possibly destroyed during war
Poor/Middling Whites • Lose social status • Employment issues WHY?????
Poor/Middling Whites • Lose property/homes • Many migrate West for jobs, but need $$$
Freedmen • Freed in an area destructed by war • Homeless • Unemployed And perhaps the biggest problem…
To Leave or Not to Leave? What would be some reasons why freedmen would leave? Why would they stay?
Closer Look back at your warm up. Based on what we discussed today, do your numbers change or stay the same? Why?
