Three-Person Mechanics Objectives for Using 3-Person Remember To Officiate! Officiate Your Primary! Trust Your Partners!
Why Three? • Provide better floor coverage • More emphasis on primary areas of responsibility • Eliminate the trend of over or under officiating • No guessing! • See the whole play • Crew Concepts • Quality calls • Consistency • Balance of calls • Deterrent to fouling, rough play • Better off-ball coverage • Promotes better basketball
Philosophy of 3 vs. 2 • High School philosophy • High School philosophy • High School philosophy Officiate the gym you are in that night! Like it or not! Although there are “nuances” to three-person that can be learned from “higher levels,” the game must be officiated using high school philosophy! Three-person should make it easier for officials to officiate using the high school philosophy! Three-person is on trial across the state!
Philosophy of 3 vs. 2 • High School philosophy • High School philosophy • High School philosophy 3-Person demands total concentration of the crew….no one gets the night off! 3-Person provides more effective coverage in pressing and full-court situations. The philosophy of strong side officiating is increased by allowing the Lead and Trail to officiate the ball and the players that are between them.
Philosophy of 3 vs. 2 • High School philosophy • High School philosophy • High School philosophy Proper off-ball coverage is increased because the Center official has the responsibility for off ball screens, backside coverage and weak side rebounding. The officials adjust their positions to the ball and the players on the court. *The info today is static— 3-person mechanics should be fluid….

Looking for Angles Spaces ANGLES Three person requires you work for “good looks.” Particularly as C and T you must move to get a good angle- but- movement is mostly parallel to sideline rather than toward the center of the floor as in 2-person SPACES Officials must not get lazy and allow themselves to get straight lined….looking at a play through the offensive player’s backside!

Communication • Communicating with your partners is more important than ever! • Don’t keep any secrets….let your partners know what you are doing • Don’t keep any secrets….let your partners know where you are looking • Don’t keep any secrets….let your partners know when you are ready
Miscellaneous Notes • Opposite is responsible for last second shot • Trail and/or C is responsible for bringing in substitutes • When the ball is in your primary…take the drive all the way to the basket! • Two person officials must learn to trust their Center official on weak side plays…officiating into the C’s area….stay out! Be willing to officiate from wide angle as Lead…when you close down you will want to poach! • If you get lost….stop! Your partners will get you back in the right spot • “Active Lead, Strong Center and Trail”
Miscellaneous Notes • You can’t be a ball watcher and be an effective 3-person official • Avoid rotating when shot is going up or ball is driving to the hole • Don’t be dead weight….three person crews can’t survive if all members aren’t participating • There will be times when all three officials are on the same side of the floor….it happens, just fix it. • Some rotations will be missed…fill a hole! • Double whistles may happen…who gets the call? • “Oh my….Oh my gosh!” Blow your whistle!!
