  2. What is it? • A movement to revive the principles and practices of ancient Greece and Rome. • Writers deliberately imitated literary forms, plots, characters, ideas and verse of the ancients. • Originality was undesirable, if not impossible.

  3. Big questions • What is the meaning of life? • Why are we here? • Why do bad things happen to good people? Literature is one avenue through which people explore possible answers to these troubling questions.

  4. Rationalism Acceptance of reason as the authority on matters of opinion, belief, or conduct Emphasis on order, clarity, and grace Focus on math, science Rationalizing government, religion, art, and architecture

  7. What’s the value in this? • The ability to reason is what sets us apart from other beasts. • Not just re-write, but add value. Make things “new” again. • Focus on harmony/balance would lead to enlightenment… goes from individual to societal level. • Focus on human nature, what we know.

  8. What are the drawbacks of this? • Arrogance – philosophical cockiness • Flaws in logic • Complacency • Human nature – often behavior didn’t match ideals
