About amerigo • Amerigo was born in 1454 in Florence, Italy. • In 1491, he went to live in spain. • When he moved to spain, he worked for a company to help people prepare their ships for their voyages. • He met Columbus through his work. • He helped him prepare for his second and third voyages.

  3. Vespucci’s journey • He set sail on a Spanish ship in 1499. • He was a navigator. • He explored the north eastern cost of south America. • In 1501, he sailed on a ship from Portugal.

  4. His writings • When Vespucci got back to Europe, he wrote about his travels. • He described the places he had been as a new world. • Martin waldseemuler, a German map maker read his writings.

  5. How America got its name • In 1507, martin made a world map and labeled south America as “America” . • Later map makers used America for north and central America. • He had never been to either place.

  6. His journeys end • After he stopped traveling, he went to work for the Spanish government. • He helped prepare the official map of Newly discovered lands and of the routes to them. • In 1512, he died in Spain.
