Germany Strengthens Chapter 10 Section 2
Germany becomes an Industrial Giant • How did it become an Industrial Giant? • Germany’s iron and coal resources • disciplined workforce • Rapid population growth • Promoting Scientific and Economic Development • Scientists were encouraged to develop new materials and solve problems in factories • The government pursued sound economic policies • Issuing a single currency • Raising tariffs to protect home industries
The Iron Chancellor • Otto von Bismarck • Pursued foreign policy goals: • 1. Wanted to keep France weak and sought strong links with Austria and Russia. • 2. He did not want to compete with British naval power. • On the Domestic Front: • He was ruthless • Wanted complete loyalty to the state • He attacked the Catholic Church – thought people were more loyal to the Pope than to Germany
Kulturkampf 1871-1878 • ‘Battle for Civilizations’ • He had laws passed that increased state power over Church actions • When the faithful rallied behind the Church, however, Bismarck retreated • He realized his error and made peace with the Church
Campaign against the Socialists • He worried that socialists would create a revolution among German workers. • Bismarck dissolved socialist groups • These actions failed, so he sponsored laws to protect workers • Germany became a leader in social reform with its health and old-age insurance
Kaiser William II • Took over after William I in 1888 • He asked Bismarck to resign as Chancellor • Believed in Divine Right • His government provided social welfare programs and services, such as public transportation, electricity, and excellent public schools. • He also developed the already huge German military, hoping to win an overseas empire like those of Britain and France
