ELECTION PROCESS The Basic Law guarantees the right to vote by secret ballot in direct and free elections to every German citizen eighteen years of age or older. To be eligible to vote, an individual must have resided in a constituency district for at least three months prior to an electionsheld every four years. The chancellor serves four year terms, and the president serves five year terms.
Germany is a Social Market Economy This means that the state guarantees the free play of entrepreneurial forces, while at the same time endeavoring to maintain the social balance.
