“Africa represents the ‘last frontier’ in global food and agricultural markets.” World Bank, 2013
“Europe is in Africa for the mutual benefit of her own industrial classes, and of the native races in their progress to a higher plane… We have added to the prosperity and wealth of these lands, and checked famine and disease.” Lord Frederick Lugard, British governor-general of Nigeria, 1914–19
“This is in Tanzania’s interests – and it’s also Britain’s best interests… There is no doubt in my mind that with the right support and the political will, Tanzania can complete its success story to a middle income country, a major market and economy of the future.” Justine Greening UK International Development Secretary Tanzania November 2013
“Women farmers have few resources and do not want seed that we canplant for one season only or seed that is owned by companies. We believe in our own seeds that we can access from our own collections or from our farmer networks, free of charge.” Beatrice Katsigazi Eastern and Southern Africa Small-scale Farmers Forum
Resistance The G8’s “new wave of colonialism” “The practical results of the recent surge in investment in African agriculture expose the empty rhetoric of African food security. Blatant land grabs are well known across the continent (…) Meanwhile actual farmers are separated from the land and the only realistic option for a livelihood.” African civil society groups, 2013
Food sovereignty: • Focuses on food for people, not profit • Values food providers and protects their rights • Builds knowledge and skills for small-scale farmers • Works with nature
What’s needed • The UK Government must stop supporting the corporate takeover of African food. • Instead aid money could help small-scale farmers with: • Research, training, and technology • Access to land, resources and local markets. • Developing and protecting seeds free from corporate control.
