  2. Strategies for reading comprehension. • Skimming. • Identifying the main idea. • Summarizing.

Skimming • This involves quickly reading over the text looking for specific information. • familiarize with the general topic and important ideas • gives head start on understanding challenging words or ideas • helps locate a particular detail quickly • helps review material you need to know for a test or presentation

  4. What to Skim • the title • table of contents • length and difficulty of the selection • any graphics or captions • headings, bulleted points, or boldface terms • repeated words • first and last paragraphs • Specific information

  5. Skim the text and answer the questions Since the first cell phones were introduced in Japan in 1979 technology has changed dramatically. By 1994, people could text each other and by 1999, you could send e-mail by phone. In what year were cell phones introduced in Japan? In what year could people send e-mails by phone?

  6. Activity • Skim and answer the questions on the article about compulsive shopping.

  14. Southern California is known for its tourist attractions and its theme parks. People come from all over the world to get a look at Hollywood, and such things as the "Walk of Fame" where many celebrities’ names are found on gold stars on Hollywood Boulevard. Tourists are also attracted to the area with hopes of catching sight of the movie stars who live in the hills surrounding Los Angeles. Many visitors come to shop in the glamorous shops on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills. Among the theme parks that attract visitors are Disneyland in Anaheim, Knott’s Berry Farm, Magic Mountain Amusement Park, and Raging Waters park. Folks who want to combine tourist attractions and theme parks can visit Universal Studios which offers both. 1.   15. Activity • In groups, find the topic and the main idea for each paragraph.

Next, identify the • main idea (what the author is saying about the subject). What key points stand out to you? Look for • these things when you read nonfiction: • main idea or the viewpoint of the writer • general subject • supporting details • definitions or explanations

  18. Homework • Read pages 17-18 (about writing summaries) in your textbook. Summarize something you have read. This is due next class Wednesday September 21st and 22nd. • Complete the take home test by next 2 hour class. • Make vocabulary card for your next two hour class.
