  3. Reference list • http://www.trstechnologies.com/Products/actuators.php • http://www.noliac.com/Files/Billeder/02%20Standard/Actuators/Noliac_Actuators_datasheet.pdf • http://www.physikinstrumente.com/en/products/piezo/index.php ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  4. Further Information • This actuator is a specific use of piezoelectricity, which makes it difficult to search • Use “ ” to better refine the search to just actuators ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  5. Major Applications • Optics • Optical switches • Tunable lasers • Medical • Micro-pumps • Medical transducers Tunable Laser http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/2011/04/ofs-tunable-laser-offers-wavelengths-from-1528-to-1564-nm.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  6. Major Applications (2) • Aerospace • Vibration control • Valves • Instrumentation • Micropositionering • Translation stage http://www.airplaneclipart.com/free_airplane_clipart/travel_icon_airplane_silhouette_0515-1102-1405-0541.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  7. Basic Working Principle • Recall that piezoelectricity works when, most commonly, crystals accumulate a charge in response to a mechanical stress • The actuators work by working the opposite direction • They produce displacement by being given a charge ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  8. Typical Configuration Bending Piezoelectric Actuator in a Valve http://www.laserfocusworld.com/articles/print/volume-38/issue-9/features/motion-control/piezoelectric-actuators-move-precisely-and-powerfully.html ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  9. Typical Configuration (2) Typical Stacked Piezoelectric Actuator http://www.noliac.com/Files/Billeder/02%20Standard/Actuators/Noliac_Actuators_datasheet.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  10. Major Specifications • Know what kind of displacement you need • Know the space you have to mount it in • Know what type of actuator is best for your design • Linear or stacked • Bending • Shear ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  11. Advantages • Vacuum compatible • Low steady-state power consumption • Microsecond range response • Doesn’t wear out ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  12. Limitations • These only work for very fine precision displacements • Roughly 10 μm– 100 μm • In order to achieve further displacements, use bender actuators or lever enhanced ones • Still only gets a few mm of displacement ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  13. Different Types • Linear • Single layer of displacement • Stacked • Consist of several actuators glued together • Obtains higher displacement Stacked Ring Actuator http://www.noliac.com/Files/Billeder/02%20Standard/Actuators/Noliac_Actuators_datasheet.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  14. Different Types (2) The linear actuator will also be one of the following: • 33-mode • Produces displacement in the same direction as an electric field • 31-mode • Produces displacement perpendicular to an electric field ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  15. Different Types (3) • Bending plate actuator • Provides the displacement through bending a small plate or ring • Allows for greater displacement than the linear or stacked actuators Bending Plate Actuator http://www.noliac.com/Files/Billeder/02%20Standard/Actuators/Noliac_Actuators_datasheet.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  16. Different Types (4) • Ceramic shear actuator plate (CSAP) • Not as common as stacked or bending actuators • Exploits shear strain produced by electric field applied perpendicularly to the polarization direction CSAP in a Clamping Configuration http://www.noliac.com/Files/Billeder/02%20Standard/Actuators/Noliac_Actuators_datasheet.pdf ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  17. Mounting Guidelines • Stacked actuators may only by stressed in the axial direction with a centered force • Tilting or shearing will damage actuator • Stacked actuators are best mounted between metal or ceramic surfaces using an epoxy • Keep glue to just the side that needs to be adhered • May have loss of performance from epoxy on other sides of actuator ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  18. Mounting Guidelines (2) • The environment for the actuator should be as dry as possible • Also be sure to shortcircuit the stack during any handling to reduce chance of rapid discharging which may damage the stacked actuator ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  19. Manufacturers • This is a small list of manufacturers that carry piezoelectric actuators • TRS technologies • Noliac • PI ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators

  20. Cost • Cost ranges from $70 - $300 • Cost is dependent on • Size • Displacement • Materials used ECE5320 Mechatronics. Assignment#1 Survey on sensors and actuators
