What will the Next Society Look Like • What will the Demographics be? • What will the new workforce look like? • What will happen to manufacturing? • Will Corporations survive? • How do we get there from here?
The New Demographics • Increase in elderly population • Decrease in population under 35 • Retirement age will reach 70 by 2030 • America’s population will continue to grow while other developed countries population will fall • This is due to immigration • The United States is used to immigration and it will be needed to staff the under 35 workforce.
The New Workforce • The new workforce will consist of knowledge workers • Knowledge workers do not produce material goods, but use their knowledge to produce intangible goods. • Knowledge workers own their own capital
New Workforce Cont. • There will be two distinct workforces • One will be made up of people over 50 • One will be made up of people under 50 • Organizations will no longer last longer then their employees • Factory workers will be fazed out in the United States just like farming. • Less people are required to work in manufacturing facilities because of new technology.
The Manufacturing Paradox • Farmers used to account for the largest single group in the workforce • Now they only account for 3% • The same thing is happening to Manufacturing jobs • With new technology firms are able to produce more with less people. • These people are made up of more knowledge workers now then the hands on type of employee of the past. • These manufacturing jobs require higher education then before.
Will the Corporation Survive? • It will survive, but not as we know it • Instead of Employees working for a firm, Employees will be considered partners or Associates of a Firm • The means of production is knowledge and knowledge is very portable • You can take your knowledge anywhere • A Growing number of Employees will become part-time workers, consultants, and contractors because they are able to take their knowledge anywhere.
The Way Ahead • The future corporation • Firms should start experimenting with new corporate forms • People policies • Enterprises must attract, hold, and make productive people who have reached official retirement age. • This will help with attaining knowledge from the more experienced workers • Outside information • This information must be attained to help the corporations know what is going on elsewhere • The internet has been a good source for outside information, even though it is disorganized
The Way Ahead Cont. • Firms need to become Change Agents • They need to start the transition • The most effective way to change successfully is to create the change. • We are predicting the change, so use the predictions and apply them to the firm
