Progression • Gardening skills are built up from growing a single plant in Year 9 to developing a whole garden plot in Year 10. These skills are used for the tree seedling production in Year 11 and support understanding of the landscaping requirements. • Tree planting in Year 10 provides knowledge required for the production and landscaping units in Year 11. • The kumara or firewood storage unit in Year 10 provides precedent for the Developing an outcome unit in Year 11.
Y9 Healthy eating Healthy action is a government initiative with lots of money behind it. Apply to the Health Board. Heirloom tomatoes and seed saving could be included under the Sustainability theme. Plant breeding is biotechnology – can touch on genetic engineering. Different types of propagation can be used for herbs – cuttings (thyme, oregano, rosemary), splitting perennials (Welsh onions), seeds (parsley, chives) Compost making is a technological process that is part of the process of producing potting mix (compost + sand)
