  1. The Phases of Water!

  2. WATER • DID YOU KNOW? Water can be classified as a SOLID, LIQUID, and GAS! • HOW???

  3. Water can be classified in all 3 phases of matter due to the amount of ENERGY that the molecules have! • Where does water get energy?

  4. Water gets energy from HEAT! Heatis thermalENERGY. • How does water change from each phase of matter to the next?

  5. FREEZING POINT = 0℃ • When the temperature of WATERreaches 0℃ the molecules have slowed down so much that they will start to form into a SOLID. • At what degrees does WATER change back to a LIQUID?

  6. MELTING POINT = 0℃ • When the temperature of ICE reaches 0℃ the molecules now are speeding up, starting to form into a SOLID. • At what degrees does WATER change to a GAS?

  7. BOILING POINT = 100℃ • When the temperature of WATER reaches 100℃ the molecules now are speeding up so much that the molecules form into aGAS. These GAS molecules are evaporating into the air. • Can matter change phases from a SOLID to a GASwithout becoming a LIQUID?

  8. Sublimation • Sublimation – The act of a material changing from the SOLID phase to the GAS phase where it does NOT go though the LIQUID phase.  • Example: As dry ice heats up, it turns right in to carbon dioxide gas. • How come dry ice can sublimate but not regular water ice? Sublimation

  9. Sublimation • The LIQUIDstate is required under normal earth atmosphere pressure.  There are some elements which, under earth’s atmospheric pressure, skip the liquid phase.  • Here is a list of some substances that sublimate on earth: • Dry ice, Naphthalene • Arsenic, Ferrocene
