Water Supply Planning • Background • Water supply planning and management require an understanding of both available water resources and demands being placed on those resources • Local Water Supply Plan (LWSP) • Water Withdrawal Registration (WWR) • This information is needed to develop a more complete understanding of water use and availability in North Carolina

Local Water Supply Plan Requirements • Requirement • Local Water Supply Plan (LWSP) • An assessment of a water system's current and future water needs and its ability to meet those needs • Units of Local Governments • Community water systems having 1,000 or more connections or serving more than 3,000 people • G.S. 143-355(l) was established in 1989 • Updates are required at least every five years • Update schedules are now staggered according to river basins

Local Water Supply Plan Contents • Complete plan includes: • System Information • Water Use Information • Water Supply Sources • Wastewater Information • System Planning and Projections • Water Shortage Response Plan • For managing water use during times of water shortages • Interbasin Transfer Worksheet (if applicable)

Water Withdrawal Registration Requirements • Requirement • Water Withdrawal Registration (WWR) • Agricultural users > 1,000,000 gallons any single day • Non-agricultural users > 100,000 gallons any single day • G.S. 143-215.22H was established in 1991 • Registrations are required at least every five years • Registrations are now being requested every year

  17. Ground Water Supply • Current Programs • DWR is currently monitoring 28 wells • DWR is seeking funds to add a new well to the monitoring network in the Sandhills Area Active DWR Network wells are distributed as shown on map.
