  20. State-Level Policies - Milestones • Milestones are the key topics or required objectives presented in a distance education course: • Monitor student progress through the course • Report distance education course completion rates • Calculate the students’ attendance and membership equivalency

  21. State-Level Policies – Distance Learning Plans • The DLP is a student-centered academic contract that details: • Student accountability and appropriateness • Course information • Instructional support • Progress monitoring

Wyoming e-Academy of Virtual Education Halfway through our first year of implementing a “hybrid” system Students are scheduled in regular high school periods with face to face teachers Run on a semester schedule and will assign grades at the semester’s end Students meet with face to face teachers every period but the vast majority of their course content and assessments take place online Teachers do A LOT of face to face supplementation and assignment replacement as needed/necessary

Wyoming e-Academy of Virtual Education Successes: The quality of the content is substantially improved over our previous content providers… The courses are very flexible and easy to modify The learning management system is more robust and feature-rich Content is a gated system meaning students can’t move forward until mastery  has been reached on the current assessment… Pre-testing is enabled so that students who earn an 80% on a pre-test can skip that component of instruction and move onto the next content item

  24. Wyoming e-Academy of Virtual Education Challenges: Courses “out-of-the-box” are ENORMOUS.  Even after we did some initial paring down of the courses are still too large. Mixed reviews/results for the new content format: grade levels, learning styles, and across different content areas Documenting classroom and supplemental activities that teachers are doing face to face with students has been a challenge The bandwidth requirements are substantial, both internal on our LAN and external to the internet.

Natrona Virtual Academy (NVA) Increase our enrollment and expand the services and opportunities that we can offer through two options… Expanding and customizing internal supplemental courses while adding more teacher student interaction to the instruction Training local staff to be ready to teach the fully online curriculum in the upcoming 2014-15 school year

  26. Natrona Virtual Academy (NVA) Successes: Students and parents have a rigorous curriculum with both programs. The teachers in both programs have a wonderful relationship with students and parents. Both program monitoring systems make it easy for NCSD to monitor the progress of our students. Reaching many students who have a hard time fitting need classes into their daily schedule have been able to earn credits towards graduation.

  27. Natrona Virtual Academy (NVA) Challenges: Not as much district control with our provider as we would like. District computers and the filters are not complementary to the program that we are using Because of staff time limitations there are many wonderful features that have went without use Technical problems with the provider and poor notification of outages/difficulties

Wyoming Connections Academy (WyCA) Successes: We have had 100% participation in PAWS/SAWS testing every year (4 years) Students who stay with WYCA for more than one year tend to make gains on proficiency standards We serve students who come a variety of locations, be it in town or a ranch sixty miles from the nearest town We provide full special education services to all students with IEP or 504 Plans

Wyoming Connections Academy (WyCA) Challenges: The logistics of remote state testing for grades 3-8 It is challenging to coordinate the high school students who take the state assessment in their resident districts The lack of fast and abundant internet service throughout the State of Wyoming
