1628 • Charles I needs money • Charles agrees to sign Petition of Right • He later ignores the document
1629 • Charles dismisses Parliament • Charles needs money, reconvenes Parliament, who passed laws limiting the kings power
1642 • English Civil War Broke Out • Anti-royalist forces led by Oliver Cromwell take control of government
1649 • Charles I executed • Cromwell established a republic called the Commonwealth of England
1653 • Cromwell dissolves Parliament • Names himself Lord Protector, essentially creating a military dictatorship
