  2. WARM UP The length of a rectangle is 2.5 times its width. The perimeter of the rectangle is 84 inches. Find the dimensions of the rectangle? Alice is counting a cash register at the end of the night. She has $1015 in $5 bills and $10 bills. If she has 138 bills altogether, how many of each type of bill does she have? Find three consecutive integers whose sum is 99. The larger of two numbers is twice the smaller. If the larger is decreased by 10, the result is 5 more than the smaller. Find the numbers.

  3. In your groups, what do you know about wind and current. Use your technology to google the topic if you need to. Come up with a few facts about wind and current that you think could be relevant to this unit.

  4. What do you know about distance? What is the formula that we have used previously when we completed mixture problems? • DISTANCE = RATE X TIME • Use the following table to help you with wind/current problems.

  5. Things to remember when you are working on wind/current problems: • With the current: x + y • Against the current: x – y • Change minutes into hours (fractions) • Use the table – it helps!! • Try and divide through if possible, so that you can use elimination.

  6. Flying against a head wind, a plane could fly 3000 km in 6 hours. The plane would require 5 h for the return trip with no change in the distance. Find the wind speed and the air speed of the plane.

  7. The air speed of a plane was 132 km/h. Flying with the wind, the plane traveled twice the distance in 5 h as it traveled against the wind in 3 h. What was the wind speed?

  8. A boat travels 4 km in 20 minutes with the current. The return trip takes 24 minutes. Find the speed of the current and the speed of the boat in still water.

  9. Rose took a half hour to row 3km with the current. When she returned, she took 90 minutes. Find her rowing rate and the speed of the current.

  10. A sea lion swims 18 km from one feeding ground to another in 27 minutes. The return trip against the ocean current takes 36 minutes. How fast does the sea lion swim in still water?

  11. Jennifer can paddle a certain distance with the current in 2.5 hours. To cover the same distance against the current, she takes 5 hours. How many times faster is her rate of paddling in still water than the speed of the current?

  12. A duck can fly 2400 m in 10 minutes with the wind. Against the wind, it can fly only two thirds of this distance in 10 minutes. How fast could the duck fly in still air? What is the rate of the wind?

  13. Ticket out the door….. Write a few sentence about today’s lesson. What were the most important things you came away with? Would you be able to explain today’s lesson to someone who was not in class today? Do you need clarity on any parts of today’s lesson? What might you need help with? Write one word problem showing your understanding of wind/current problems. Look back at the examples that we did today in class.
