Intro: Systems of Equations Skit “WHEN AM I EVER GOING TO USE THIS!!!”
How To Solve Systems of Equations • There are three major ways to solve a system of equations: • Graphing • Substitution • Elimination • We also looked at how matrices could be used to solve a system of equations • (P. Mancuso, personal communication, February 10, 2014)
Solving Systems Cont. • When working with our own individual data, we made sure that we solved using each of the four methods to guarantee that our intersection points were correct.
Research • Our research was done by picking two basketball teams and comparing their turnovers and points scored. We then created lines of best fit and found the intersection points. The best method was graphing in our calculator. We were able to determine a winner of a potential matchup between our teams.
Mancuso’s Data (2014)
Future Research • We have determined that turnovers is a great indicator of who will win a game. • However, we would like to do future research on FG% and Assists and compare it to our data from this unit. • We are hoping to get a good enough system together to be able to correctly predict each game in the NCAA tournament.
Other Uses of Systems of Equations • Here are some other areas that we could use systems of equations: • Physics • Chemistry • Economics • Business • Navigation • (P. Mancuso, personal communication, February 17, 2014) • We are very interested in learning how different types of functions will change how we need to interpret data.
Q&A • What questions do you have for us about our individual or group project?
