Tool and Technique Stations • Instructions: Read the task card at each station carefully, and then do the activity. • Reminder: Use our group procedures. You must work with your group; you will move through the stations together. Only one group may be at a station at a time. You may do the stations in any order. • You do not have time to socialize with your group. Work seriously and responsibly through the stations. If you reach a point at which you cannot get to another station because they are all in use, you will need to wait quietly and watch until that station becomes available.
Length Station • and calculation of volume
What’s important when using a ruler? • Measure from the ZERO, not the edge of the ruler.
How can you find the volume of a box? • Use a ruler to measure length, width, height. • Multiply l x w x h. • How can you find volume of some irregularly-shaped solids? • by displacementof liquid • (the difference)
What is this? What is it for? What shape is it? Describe the markings. graduated cylinder measuring volume (in mL) cylindrical lines go up gradually from bottom to top
How do you use it? What’s different about these graduations? • Read at BOTTOM of meniscus (curve). • (You must move your head.)
How can you find the volume of a box? • Use a ruler to measure length, width, height. • Multiply l x w x h. • How can you find volume of some irregularly-shaped solids? • by displacementof liquid • (the difference)
What’s important before measuring by displacement? • Most objects should not be placed in a graduated cylinder. • Help me! I’m stuck!
What is this? What is it for? • triple beam balance • measuring mass (in grams)
How do you use it?--like Goldilocks • Put all 3 riders at zero. • Put object on the pan. • PAPA—Start with Papa rider. Move Papa too far to right, then move it one back. • MAMA—Do the same for the Mama rider. • BABY—Slide the Baby rider until it is just right. • Add the 3 measurements (Papa, Mama, Baby) together to get the mass in grams.
Journal Review Station • Return to your table and complete a Peer Review form for last week’s journal. Do this for each person in your group.
You try it. Answer in your journal. No machine guns!A) What is the maximum mass that can be measured with this device?B) What is the minimum mass that can be measured accurately with this device? C) Mass (weigh) the objects provided: test tube clamp __________ 50 ml beaker __________ 250 ml beaker _____________
