  1. 2011 PROJECT

  2. What is a snowmobile ?

  3. What is a snowmobile ? • A snowmobile, also known in some places as a snowmachine, sled, or skimobile , is a land vehicle for winter travel on snow. • Designed to be operated on snow and ice, they require no road or trail. • Design variations enable some machines to operate in deep snow or forests; most are used on open terrain, including lakes or driven on paths or trails. • Usually built to accommodate a driver and perhaps one adult passenger, their use is much like motorcycles and All-terrain vehicles (ATVs) intended for winter use on snow-covered ground and frozen ponds and waterways. • They have no enclosure other than a windshield and its engine normally drives a continuous track or tracks at the rear; skis at the front provide directional control.

  4. Analysis of the Brief 5 Marks

  5. Analysis of the Brief Design a model of a …. Simplify the design brief Where do I start?

  6. Examine carefully each part of the brief

  7. Analysis of the Brief Design a model of a snowmobile to the general specifications outlined….. MODEL: [noun] A miniature representation of a thing, with the several parts in due proportion; sometimes, a facsimile of the same size. is a land vehicle for winter travel on snow

  8. specifications a. Have the rear propulsion unit controlled by an ON/OFF switch b. Incorporate front skis with a steering mechanism c. Have seating capacity for the driver only Key Words ?

  9. Analysis of the Brief a. Have the rear propulsion unit controlled by an ON/OFF switch 5 Key Words ? What does this mean for my design ?

  10. Analysis of the Brief a. Have the rear propulsion unit controlled by an ON/OFF switch Propulsion- means to push forward or drive an object forward. What does this suggest ?

  11. Analysis of the Brief b. Incorporate front skis with a steering mechanism 4 Key Words ? What does this mean for my design ?

  12. Analysis of the Brief A ski is a long, flat device worn on the foot designed to help the wearer slide smoothly over snow, plural b. Incorporate front skis with a steering mechanism a mechanism by which something is steered unite or merge with something already in existence, have as a component

  13. Analysis of the Brief c. Have seating capacity for the driver only 4 Key Words ? What does this mean for my design ?

  14. Analysis of the Brief c. Have seating capacity for the driver only You have to have a seat for one person

  15. Analysis of the Brief - constraints • All main operating features are clearly visible without dismantling • The longest dimension of the device does not exceed 300mm • Electric power does not exceed 9 volts What effect does each have on my design ? you have to state impact of each

  16. Analysis of the Brief Design a model of a snowmobile… What do I now?

  17. What are the areas for design ? • chassis/body 2. the rear propulsion unit 3. Incorporate front skis with a steering mechanism 4. seating capacity for the driver only

  18. Investigation of solutions 10 Marks

  19. 2 stages • Investigate existing solutions…how they work • Possible solutions there are several formats for this process ….your own individual work….

  20. Existing Solutions

  21. Snowmobile: one or two-seated motor vehicle, with skis and a track, that travels on snow.Handlebars: metal tube used to steer the snowmobile.Brake handle: handle that operates the brake.Backrest: back support.Passenger restraint strap: handle passengers can use to hold themselves in place.Dual seat: two-person seat.Reflector: light-reflecting device on the back of the snowmobile.Snow guard: part that protects the passenger against flying snow.Sprocket: round, toothed object that turns on an axel.Idler wheel: wheel guiding the track.Track: jointed belt that moves the snowmobile forwards.Shock absorber: device for reducing shocks.Leaf spring: mechanism that gives flexibility to the movements of a vehicle.Ski: piece of metal, curved upward at the front and that facilitates sliding on snow.Head light: front light.Air scoop: intake for air to be filtered.Cab: cover of the engine compartment at the front of a snowmobile.Windshield: front window.
