  1. Can PET/CT and PET FDG predict Chemotherapy response in lung cancer patients? By: Megan Broscious

  2. Introduction: • Cancer is the leading cause of death in the United States. • More people did from lung cancer than any other type of cancer. • Not every patient responds to chemotherapy.

  3. Methods • 100 male and 100 female cancer patients will be evaluated with PET/CT and or FDG PET to predict which patients will respond to treatment. • The 200 patients will be evaluated weekly for a period of 7 weeks, as they undergo 2 courses of docetaxel and carboplatin. • The prospective data will be attained by using a nominal level of measurement and a Chi-square Goodness-of-Fit statistical test.

  4. Methods… • A positive response will be represented by a negative slope and significantly different from zero. • A negative response will be represented by a positive slope or one that was not different from zero. • The patients will then be followed for one year to see if the results were correct.

  5. Results • The results of several conducted studies show that PET/CT and or FDG PET can potentially predict which patients will respond to treatments in week one and week three of chemotherapy.

  6. Implications • With this new technology, patients will have the option to cease chemotherapy if they are not responding, saving them from the grueling side effects of chemotherapy. • Patients also have the option to select a new treatment plan.

  7. Costs: • PET scans are more costly than other diagnostic imaging scans.

  8. Conclusion • More studies are needed to completely validate the results of these studies. With this in mind, according to studies done, PET/CT and or FDG PET do have the ability to predict chemotherapy response in lung cancer patients.
