Agenda What is a library? What are holdings? The obvious, not so obvious and (perhaps) surprising Summary
What is a library? A library is a collection of sources, resources [...] a collection of useful material for common use [...] modern libraries are increasingly being redefined as places to get unrestricted access to information in many formats and from many sources. Wikipedia
What is a library - assumptions • A library: • Selects information resources (in various formats) • Scopes information • - For a specific group of users • Has unique business processes • Has a unique identity
What are holdings? • Following the previous definition of a library: • Everything the library has or buys access to - Physical - Electronic • Everything else the library deems relevant - Institutional repositories - Open access material - Etc. • Everything digital the library produces in-house - Image collections - Digitization projects - Etc.
Libraries and holdings in a modern context • It should be possible for the library to: • Provide one-stop access to its entire scope - Local holdings - Licensed material - Digital content • Target its information universe at its users • Maintain its business processes in doing so • Maintain its identity and uniqueness • Make sure its holdings are available elsewhere
The obvious - have all content in a single user interface
The not so obvious - perform search and delivery in the same UI
Some things you could not see... • Tons of back office intelligence • Sophisticated ingest/publishing platform • Normalization • Interoperability between many systems • Hard work behind the scenes gives UI simplicity • Strong adherence to standards
Taking it to the next level - Create discovery trails for the end users
Expose your holdings - Lead your users back to you
Summary • Holdings are always local • Holdings that are not accessible can be noise • Libraries hold the key to access • Maintain a local identity in a global landscape
