Modern America The Great Depression to the Cold War
The Great Depression 1929- 1939 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8k0jJdqKP0 The Great Depressionwas a severe worldwide economic depression in the decade preceding World War II.
The New Deal (1933) • When Franklin D. Roosevelt became President in the middle of the Great Depression, he offered the discouraged American people a New Dealto deliver relief to the unemployed and those in danger of losing farms and homes, recovery to agriculture and business, and reform. He put millions of people back to work building roads, dams, etc.

Social Security formed (1935) • Social Security was structured so that working people and employers put money in so that they would have an income when they could no longer work/retired. • http://www.history.com/videos/fdr-creates-social-security?cmpid=MRSS_Bing_HIS#fdr-creates-social-security
Social Security • Four important changes happened in America beginning in the mid-1880s that made the traditional systems of economic security for elders increasingly difficult
The urbanization of America • The year 1920 was a historical tipping-point. In that year, for the first time in our nation's history, more people were living in cities than on farms.
The Industrial Revolution • Workers went from being self employed and self reliant, to being wage earners, dependent on an employer
The disappearance of the "extended" family • For most of our history, we lived in "extended families" that included children, parents, grandparents and other relatives. The advantage of the extended family was that when a family member became too old or sick to work, the other family members assumed responsibility for their support.
A marked increase in life expectancy • better health care and sanitation, and the development of effective public health programs, Americans began to live significantly longer
Public Assistance/ Food Stamps Public assistance consisted of support and contributions from friends, neighbors and religious groups prior to the Great Depression in the 1930s. Until this time, there was no formal federal program to provide assistance to those in need. Those who found themselves in dire need of food or shelter relied heavily on the kindness of others to provide the necessary resources. It was not uncommon in that time period for neighbors and family to help each other out pooling resources or lending a hand. In 1933, Franklin Roosevelt rolled out the New Deal which provided social and welfare services aimed at relieving the temporary effects of poverty and homelessness in the United States
The end of the Depression • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKAmpET3DS4 • The New Deal programs eased the hardships of the Great Depression • Once the U.S. was involved in the war, both people and industry became essential to the war effort. Weapons, artillery, ships, and airplanes were needed quickly. Men were trained to become soldiers and the women were kept on the homefront to keep the factories going. Food needed to be grown for both the homefront and to send overseas. • It was ultimately the entrance of the U.S. into World War II that ended the Great Depression in the United States. Rosie the Riveter
World War II (1939) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qJdrXBI3zJI&feature=related • A global conflict that resulted in more deaths than any other war. Germany, Italy and Japan were trying to conquer other countries. It was the bloodiest, deadliest war the world had ever seen. More than 38 million people died, many of them innocent civilians. It also was the most destructive war in history. Fighting raged in many parts of the world. More than 50 nations took part in the war, which changed the world forever.
Pearl Harbor (1941) • Japan bombed our navy ships in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. It is the event that brought the US into World War II.
Atom bomb dropped on Japan (1945) • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N-OWTkXJUms • Our retaliation for Pearl Harbor. 2 Atomic bombs were dropped on Japan. WWII came to an end.
German is split…. • to prevent it from rebuilding quickly and going to war again like it did after WW1. • The Communist Soviet Union was in control of East Germany • The US, England and France were in control of West Germany.
The Cold War 1948 • The Cold War is the name given to the distrustful relationship that developed between the USA and the USSR after World War II. The Soviet Union had a vast army in the field (Red Army) while the Americans had the most powerful weapon in the world, the A-bomb. The Soviets had no way on knowing how many America had.
The Cold War 1948-1989 • It arose out of the clash of ideas/ ideologies and interests of the two main winners of WW2 - the U.S. and the U.S.S.R. • Stalin (USSR leader) started the Cold War by invading Poland and reneging on his promise to allow free elections there. This was followed by Soviet occupation of much of the rest of Eastern Europe, as well as aiding communist expansion in Asia. • This clash lasted for more than 50 years!
