CLIMATE LITERACY THROUGH CHALLENGER LEARNING CENTERS Annette Brickley Challenger Center for Space Science Education
Project Goals • Using the national network of Challenger Learning Centers (CLCs) for large-scale teacher professional development and curriculum dissemination in climate literacy. We have 3 approaches: • Professional development workshops at 16 sites. • Online curriculum modules (5 themes, 4 spheres) • Online interactive (CCEarth4U- carbon/temp model)
Partners & Players • Training the trainers: • Institute for Global Environmental Strategies’ Earth System Science Education Alliance (IGES- ESSEA) • American Museum of Natural History’s Seminars in Science (AMNH-SOS) • NASA data & content tools: • My NASA Data • NASA Earth Observations (NEO) • Earth Observatory • Making it all happen: • Rita Karl, former Principal Investigator, CCSSE • Hilarie Davis, Evaluator, Technology for Learning Consortium, Inc. • Annette Brickley, Instructional Designer • Carlos Nunez, interim PI, CCSSE
Professional Development through the Network Sixteen leaders from the national network of CLCs were trained in the content through course-work with partners Each of the trained CLC sites hosts a 1-day teacher workshop on climate change and Earth system science using the new resources. All participants receive continuing support in the use of the new resources. Our goal is to train up to 400 teachers through the core group of 16 CLCs and reach several thousand students.
Earth System Science Curriculum from and for PD 20inquiry-based lessons in climate change and Earth system science. Grouped into 5 thematic modules Aclimate-focused event as seen through the lens of four of Earth's spheres: lithosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and atmosphere. Use My NASA Data, NEO, Earth Observatory coupled with hands-on modeling. Targeted to grades 6-10. Rainforest in Crisis Mt. Pinatubo California Climate A Frozen Arctic Hurricanes
Online Carbon Cycle Interactive Represents the basic exchange of carbon between spheres and its relation to temperature. Grouped into 5 thematic scenarios User is guided to make changes in given variables based on current conditions and observed rates of change. Model output graphs- 4 carbon reservoirs and temperature in 1 year and 20 years. Includes support materials for teachers. Deforestation Volcano California Climate Frozen Arctic Hurricane

Evaluation update • Workshop sites since June 2011: • Paramus, NJ • Dayton, OH • Kenai, AK • Richmond, VA • Most attendees were middle school teachers (106 of 134). All would recommend the workshop and plan to use the modules with a total of 13,307 students and the interactive with a total of 11,730 students. • Suffern, NY (x 2) • Tallahassee, FL (x 2) • Framingham, MA • Chattanooga, TN
Evaluation update • Participants reported that: • GCCE lessons align with their state curricula (4.3-4.9/5). • They feel confident in using the GCCE lessons (4.0-4.3). • They plan to use what they learned with their students (4.0-4.6). • Lessons have improved their knowledge (4.7-4.9). • They plan to use the online interactives (4.4-4.6). • They plan to return to the Challenger GCCE website (4.4-4.7). • Workshop attendees said they would tell other educators that the workshop was well done, had good ideas, that the interactives were easy to use, and that they learned a lot. One teacher said, “Don’t retire without implementing these resources!”
Outreach update • Conference attendance/presenting: NARST and NSTA (x3) • Passed out materials and spoke to 425 educators • Spikes in the website hit-count after every workshop and each meeting: a good sign that teachers are accessing our resources after a workshop or meeting. • Our hits to date are as follows: • GCCE Website Page Views - 2,943 • GCCE Earth4U Page Views - 2,396 • Total GCCE page views - 5,339 • Total GCCE lesson downloads - 4,335 • Total GCCE hits/downloads – 9,674
