Do Now: • Take out your binder with your signed your contract, please have ready to collect • On a piece of paper, write down 5 events that you can describe from last year!
Objective: • Students will work in groups to see how much historical information they can recall, and the order it took place • Every students will complete an activity sheet, which they will place in their binders as notes pertaining to review • Students will be working with content and chronological order
Directions • Each row will be one group • The first person in the row will receive a stack of index cards • As a group, they must organize these cards in chronological order. • On the activity handout provided, each student must fill out the events in chronological order and define each event (Students may use a separate sheet of paper for purposes of the game) • The first group, with the most correct, will win!!
Chronological Order of Events • Paleolithic Age (2.5 million-8000 BC or BCE) • Neolithic Revolution (10,000 BC) • Sumerian Civilization (3000 BC built cities) • Kingdom of Israel (1020-922 BC) • Roman Republic (509 BC) • Rise of Christianity (29 AD or CE) • Byzantine Empire (527 AD) • Islamic Empire (622 AD) • Crusades (1093 AD) • Mongols Empire (1227 AD) • Renaissance (1300’s- 1600s AD)
Paleolithic Age (2.5 million-8000 BC) • 4 characteristics of a Paleolithic person: • Hunters and Gatherers: Nomads (simple social structure) • Adapted to their environment: made simple tools and weapons from stone, bone and wood • Believed in an afterlife- buried their dead with care • Migrated out of Africa
Neolithic Revolution (10,000 BC) • Revolution means “CHANGE” • Cause: • Environmental changes: warmer weather • Effects: • Planted seeds to grow food • Domesticate animals • Permanent settlements (towns-villages-cities) • New social classes • New technology • Rise of civilizations: first ones along a river (food source)
Sumerian Civilization (3000 BC) • Mesopotamia • Along the Tigris & Euphrates Rivers • Fertile Crescent • “Land between the rivers” • Ziggurats, cuneiform, calendar • Vulnerable to invasion • Other major groups in the area: • Babylonians (code of Hammurabi), Assyrians (warriors), Hittites (iron working) • Other river valley civilizations • Egypt, Huang He and Indus River
Kingdom of Israel (1020-922 BC) • First monotheistic religion • Fertile crescent • Hebrew people • Promised land by God “Canaan” • Saul, David and Solomon were kings who built the kingdom • 100 years of power • Babylonians captured kingdom (Diaspora) • Jewish people never united in a kingdom again
Roman Republic (509 BC) • A form of government in which power rests with citizens who have the right to vote to select their leaders (free born male citizens) • Patricians & Plebeians • Complex government: Twelve Tables, Consuls & Senate • Golden Age • Other classical civilization • Ancient Athens (direct democracy), Greece (Alexander the Great), China (Han Dynasty), India
Rise of Christianity (29 AD) • Followers of Jesus • Under the Roman Empire in 313 AD when Constantine make it the official religion of the empire • Derived from Judaism (monotheistic) • Life, death and resurrection of Jesus • Church hierarchy: Pope, Bishop, priest in a diocese
Byzantine Empire (527 AD) • Eastern Portion of the old Roman Empire • Justinian greatest leader • Accomplishments: Justinian’s Code, preservation of Greco-Roman culture, Hagia Sophia, Eastern Orthodox Religion • Influences the rise of Russia and Eastern Europe: • Religion :Orthodox • Alphabet: Cyrillic • Government: autocratic • Culture: Greco-Roman
Islamic Empire (622 AD) • Founded by Muhammad • Arabian Peninsula • 5 pillars • Monotheistic religion • Created a large empire • Golden age under the Abbasid Dynasty
Crusades (1093 AD) • Holy War between the Christians and the Muslims over control of the Holy Land of Jerusalem • 4 wars • Pope Urban called for Christian soldiers (Crusades) • Effects: • Brought new ideas, goods, trade to Western Europe • Established city-states, gave the pope increased power temporarily, gave kings power • Ended feudalism
Mongols (1227 AD) • Began with Genghis Khan • “warriors on horseback” • Out of Mongolia into Russia (Golden Horde), China (Yuan Dynasty), southeast Asia • As far as India (Mughal Dynasty) and Japan • Major leaders: Genghis Khan, Kublai Khan and Akbar the Great • Brought prosperity • Pax Mongolia
Renaissance (1300-1600) • Rebirth • Began in Italy (Florence) • Medici family- bankers • DaVinci, Michelangelo, Rafael • Painters, artists, sculptors, writers • Brought new ideas and questioning • Spurred the Protestant Reformation, Catholic (counter) Reformation, Scientific Revolution and Political Revolutions will follow
