Learning Stylesand theLearning Cycle Understanding Ourselves and the People With Whom We Communicate
A sunrise A natural disaster A civil war A wondrous journey A long nap A flowering fruit tree Imprisonment To what would you compare the majority of your “school” experience?
1. Where everybody genuinely likes each other. 2. Where I can have access to the information 3. Where everything is focused on making life work. 4. Where it’s creative and innovative. School requires learning. What kind of class do you prefer?
Spirit of Prophecy on Diversity “All minds are not molded alike” (Testimonies, Vol. 4, p. 128).
Spirit of Prophecy on Diversity “There are no two leaves of a tree precisely alike; neither do all minds run in the same direction, but while this is so, there may be unity in diversity . . . So it is in the design of God (Review & Herald, July 4, 1899).
Spirit of Prophecy on Diversity Our diversity is “to be a benefit and blessing” to one another (Testimonies, vol. 4, p. 128).
Two Dimensions of Learning • Perceiving • Take in through direct, subjective experience • Take in through intellect, objective thinking • Processing • Internalize, make part of self through reflecting (observing) • Internalize, make part of self through action (doing)
How We Perceive Experiencing Sensing/Feeling Intuition Conceptualizing Thinking Intellect
Make connections Are more empathetic Feel their way through things Ask “Why?” and “What if?” Make distinctions Are more objective Think things through Ask “What?” and “How?” Feelers Thinkers
How We Process Active Doing Reflective Observing
Step back, take a long look Imagine it first Need to be allowed to watch first Need time to ease into it Absorb it by reflective observation Dive right in Learn by doing Need to be allowed to jump right in Can’t wait to start Get it by active experimentation Doers Reflectors

Experiencing Sensing/Feeling Intuition Active Doing Reflective Observing Conceptualizing Thinking Intellect Four Kinds of Learners Inventors Friends Why? What if? How? What? Scientists Professors
These learners want personal involvement and engagement with other participants. They want to respond to the topic through interpersonal relations. Attend to their feelings. Friends
These people want mastery and competence. They want to remember the information and to perform the skills that are presented. Engage them with facts. Professors
These people want to understand and comprehend. They want to reason with the information that is being presented. Involve them with formulating ideas. Scientists
These people want to adapt, modify, extend, explore, and create. They want to reorganize the information into new and different arrangements. Give them opportunities to envision and create. Inventors
Experiencing Sensing/Feeling Intuition Active Doing Reflective Observing Conceptualizing Thinking Intellect The Learning Cycle Why? What if? How? What?
1. Connect the learner to the central concept. Create an experience or have them recall one. 2. Share with them the expert information. Use as many modalities as possible. 3. Have them apply what they’ve learned to their personal life. Test them. 4. Have them explore new possibilities this learning opens up to their lives. Share value. The Learning Cycle
Apply Motivate Feel it Apply it Practice it Understand it Practice Explore The Learning Cycle
Lesson Plan Current ABSG Lesson Apply Motivate Practice Explore
Lesson Plan Creation Apply Encourage each class member to create something during the coming week (art, photography, music, poetry, story, sculpture, electronic media, etc.). Provide time in a future class for sharing. Motivate Invite an artist, poet, sculptor, musician, or story writer to make a short report of his or her process in creating a piece of art. Have the class compare and contrast this process with God’s way of creating the earth. Practice Have the class discuss the following question: What does our exploration of God’s creative process tell us about Him? Explore Organize the class into small groups and have each list scriptural references that describe specific facets of God’s process of the Creation of the earth. Have a volunteer from each group share their list.
