The Sick Kids Friends FoundationDROP-IN CENTRE by Kristina Blümelová DVS3C
About the Foundation The Sick Kids Friends Foundation was set up in 1992 to support the work of the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. The Hospital receives over 100,000 children through its doors each year from all over the East of Scotland.
What is the Drop-in centre? The Sick Kids Friends Foundation Drop-in centre is a unique support service for children, young people and families attending the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh. It‘s aim is to provide a safe family space in welcoming, homely environment where families can relax, chat and access services (complementary therapies, activities, counselling and a place to meet others in similar situations).
It‘s team is always there to listen and support everyone, if required. Volunteers are a very important part of it‘s team and play a valuable role in welcoming visitors. With a comfortable lounge to relax and unwind, internet access and a bright and stimulating activity room, there is something to support each and every family member here in Drop-In Centre.
It gives assistance in five primary areas: • the provision of a wide variety of extra comforts, which make time in hospital better for children • the provision of extra child and family-friendly facilities • the purchase of extra medical equipment over and above NHS provision • the provision of extra support for sick children who are cared for in the Community • funding for extra training and research
Complementary Therapies • Complementary therapies are available to parents and carers of children receiving treatment in the Royal Hospital for Sick Children. Therapies offered include: • Aromatherapy massage • Indian Head massage • Reflexology
Fun for all the family With a wide range of arts and crafts activities, board games, story books, Nintendo Wii, Sky TV, DVD‘s, internet facilities and much more, the Centre is an ideal place for children, parents and siblings. Staff and volunteers are on hand to assist young people with the activities of their choice, whether that may be their very own masterpiece!
