Community Development Engages communities in learning, organizing, and acting in ways that empower local people to influence the future of their community through democratic means. MU Extension CD Program Community capacity building that results in economically, socially and environmentally viable communities.

Reinvigorating local economies • 31 new nonprofit organizationsleveraged public and private resources to address local social and economic issues. • 12 Year Partnershipwith the Old North St. Louis Restoration Group, MU Extension and UMSL forcapacity building and strategic planning • home ownership and housing revitalization tools, a biking/walking tour, neighborhood DVD and community museum. • new home construction and a $35 million redevelopment project.
Engaging citizens to create viable communities • Columbia Imagined engaged1,500 people who generated over 360 goals to guide future development options. • Brunswick startedfour new businesses, revitalized and funded downtown improvements, renewed collaboration and feeling of accomplishment and hope. • Crawford Countyexplored its food desert status, mapped community gardens, promoted healthier eating and exercise.
Giving people a voice creates action • Hillsboro and Monticello First Historic Preservation: creating historic village, generated over $1 million in revenue downtown streets and beautification. • Herculaneumongoing implementation of community plan: • new $7 million bridge • new high school • emergency warning sirens • Festivals • committed to building an all-inclusive playground • Committed to providing active waling and biking options
Saving lives & recovering from disaster Every $1 spent in preparedness saves $3 and untold lives. • Flooding—Tornadoes—Drought • Communities’ disaster recovery periods have been shortened. • Greater community builds a greater sense of cohesionand collaboration. • Revival and ensuring resilient families, businesses, farms and communities.
Developing leaders &community capacity • 10 community projects within 3-5 years (28-50/year)—28 community leadership programs in the state last year • New Camdenton high school ($31.5 million) • Aquatic center in Moberly • Emergency warning sirens in over 25 northern MO communities • St. Louis Neighborhood Leadership Academy • Saline County
Enhancing rural economies • Mississippi River Hills Region: 5 businesses added new product line, 5 new businesses, 10 businesses expanded. • Ozark Heritage Region: 1,500 students from 20 area high schools and three colleges in Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour—Over 90% said they would start a business at some point in their career. • Old Trails Region combining cultural and historic tourism, agriculture and food. • Brookfield focus on young people and revitalization.
Creating jobs and healthy communities • Old North Healthy Community Initiative: neighborhood grocery co-op, creating jobs and healthy affordable food • The St. Louis Healthy Corner Store Project • The Warsaw Farmers Market • In process: Pilot Grove community grocery store and Keytesville retail store with local produce and artisan products
Fostering creativity & innovation • Community Development Academy • “To see someone who was idle doing some activities that is generating an income [is a valuable result]. The CDA participation has helped me to empower our community.” • “Through increased partnerships I have been able to leverage an invaluable amount of in-kind resources.” • Community Arts: Lexington, Mexico, Warren County, Sedalia, Montgomery County
