  6. HAZARDS ALONG THE ROAD • Heat • Lack of water • Sandstorms • Blizzards • Altitude sickness • robbers

  7. WRITING • Written language developed during Shang Dynasty • Started with pictograms • Simplified into symbols/characters • About 50,000 characters exist

  8. GREAT BUILDERS • Massive projects: • Great Wall • Built for protection/isolation • Grand Canal • Built for transportation

  9. RELIGION AND PHILOSOPHY • Confucius • Taught importance of moral character • Citizens need to be responsible • Rulers should lead by example • Developed during the Zhou Dynasty period

  11. TAOISM • Developed by Lao Tzu during Zhou dynasty period • Goal is to find harmony with nature
