8th Grade Exit Interviews A PIRATE’S JOURNEY Zion Central Middle School
What are Exit Interviews? • An Exit Interview is an opportunity for you to reflect on your achievements in Middle School. • You may also want to share any challenges you have been able to overcome. • It is also a time for you to assess yourself, think about, and set goals for High School.
Important to Know!!! • Exit Interviews will be scheduled to take place the 3rd week in May. • You will be getting some materials/resources to get you started with your Showcase Portfolio. These will be distributed when you come back from break. • Showcase Portfolios are due to be completed May 16th, 2011. They will be collected and organized for the Exit Interview Day. • You will be GREAT!!!!!!
Here’s an overview of what to expect during the Exit Interviews:
You will be preparing a Showcase Portfolio and receiving an outline that will serve as a guide. • Choose the core class you want to feature during the interview. • In addition, bring an artifact to share that symbolizes you; a project, hobby or something you are proud of: trophy, soccer ball, art project, etc.
Dress for Success! • Your teachers will suggest what to wear on Exit Interview day.
Practice your eye contact, handshake and smile. You are sharing all about YOU!
10 minutes before your scheduled time: • You will check-in. • Find your Assigned Portfolio drawer and get your folder. • A parent/community volunteer will steer you towards the Interview location.
The Interview location will be set up with numbered table stations. Each student is assigned a table number and time.
Just Look at Them!!! Piece of cake!!! We’re going to knock them down, yeah!!! Are you ready for US???
As you are waiting … • Relax • Reflect • Be confident
When Your Interviewer Flags You Over: • Walk confidently to the table. • Look him/her in the eyes. • Extend your hand and give a firm handshake, not losing eye contact. • Sit down and place your Portfolio and artifact on your lap or on the table.
Warning bell • You will have 10 minutes for your Interview. Use the full allotment of time. • 2 minutes before your time slot is over, you will hear a tone and a reminder, “2 minutes”. • Continue your conversation and begin to close it up. • End with a nice smile, thank Interviewer and one more handshake!
Report Back to the Check-in Table • You did it! • Take all of your work out of the Showcase Portfolio, hand over the folder to one of the Parent/Community Volunteers, and take your work and any artifacts with you. • Stop by the Graduation recording booth to record your “Grad Shout Out!”
The Grad Shout-Out! • Your core teacher will give you a form to write a short Grad message – share your ZCMS memories or thank your teachers/parents/friends or whomever . • You will have 10 seconds to record. Practice! We only record once!! • We will play all messages during part of the Graduation Ceremony in June.
What happens after the interview? • Your interviewer will write feedback comments, based upon the rubric and it will be turned-in to your teacher. • All core teachers will look these comments over, then give them to you. • Congratulations on your successful portfolio reflection process, which is a valuable skill for every learner.
Any questions??? • If you have any questions use one of the index cards provided to jot them down. • Turn them in to your teacher at the end of this presentation. • Questions will be responded to in a short presentation similar to this one. • Some questions will be answered by your core teachers or through a link on our ZCMS Web Site.
Start Getting Ready!!! • As you go off into Spring Break, don’t forget to begin thinking about your Interview Portfolio. • What things will you share? • Successes, challenges overcome, sports/academic accomplishments, feature core class, etc. • We’ll have more information for you when you return from break. Good luck!!!
