  3. What is Cyberbullying? • "Cyberbullying involves the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others." -Bill Belsey • Cyberbullying is willful and involves recurring or repeated harm inflicted through the medium of electronic text. (Wikipedia)

  4. Examples • Continuing to send emails to someone who doesn’t want to be contacted • May also include threats, sexual remarks, derogative labels (i.e., hate speech) • Publish personal contact information for their victims at websites. • They may attempt to assume the identity of a victim for the purpose of publishing material in their name that defames or ridicules them.

  5. FAST FACTS • 99 per cent of Canadian students have used the Internet • 48 per cent of Canadian students use it for a least an hour a day • nearly 60 per cent of Canadian students use chat rooms and instant messaging • This is the "Always On" generation (*74% of connected young people use instant messaging several times a week. -Pew Report ). • By 2005 the annual number of text and visual messages sent over the Internet is expected to reach 1.2 trillion. • In 2002, cell phone users passed the one billion user mark, this is the fastest 10 year penetration of any product in commercial history. • A 2002 British survey found that one in four youth, aged 11 to 19 has been threatened via their computers or cell phones, including death threats. About 75% of people have been involved in spreading gossip or rumours electronically.

  18. Involved • Check your teens web pages, spaces, blogs • See what they are writing about, who they are chatting with, what pictures they are posting • Watch what they are doing • Put your home computer in a public place- especially if you have a webcam or digital camera • Check out their history • Talk to your teens about safety in the world of technology • http://www.cybertip.ca/en/cybertip/inet_safety_tips Warning: Be careful not to snoop!

  28. QUESTIONS? COMMENTS?

  29. If You Are The Victim of a Cyberbully What Can Be Done Now? • Don't reply to messages from cyberbullies • Do not keep this to yourself! You are NOT alone and you did NOT do anything to deserve this! Tell an adult you know and trust! • Inform your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or cell phone/pager service provider • Inform your local police • Do not erase or delete messages from cyberbullies • Protect yourself

  30. Main Points • Do unto to others… • Kids are BRAVE on the internet when it comes to their interactions with others • You know your child/yourself best, stay connected with each other • Keep educating yourselves

  31. Staying Safe Online:A Young Person's Contract 1. I will ALWAYS tell a parent or another adult immediately, if something is confusing or seems scary or threatening. 2. I will NEVER give out my full name, real address, telephone number, school name or location, schedule, password, or other identifying information when I'm online. I will check with an adult for any exceptions. 3. I will NEVER have a face-to-face meeting with someone I've met online. In rare cases, my parents may decide it's OK, but if I do decide to meet a cyberpal, I will make sure we meet in a public place and that a parent or guardian is with me. 4. I will NEVER respond online to any messages that use bad words or words that are scary, threatening, or just feel weird. If I get that kind of message, I'll print it out and tell an adult immediately. The adult can then contact the online service or appropriate agency. If I'm uncomfortable in a live chat room, I will use the "ignore" button. 5. I will NEVER go into a new online area that is going to cost additional money without first asking permission from my parent or teacher. 6. I will NEVER send a picture over the Internet or via regular mail to anyone without my parent's permission. 7. I will NOT give out a credit card number online without a parent present.
