  3. MOTIVATION • Internal state that activates behavior and directs it towards a goal

  4. Instinct theory • Natural tendencies that determine behavior • Occur in all species • More popular in the 1900’s than present day

  5. Drive reduction theory • Need  Drive • Need: biological or psychological requirement of an organism • Drive: state of tension caused from a NEED that motivates toward a goal • Event (food deprivation)  Drive (hunger)  Action (eating)  Result (drive reduction)

  6. DRIVE REDUCTION THEORY • Attempt to maintain homeostasis • Correct imbalances from normal state • Psychologist- Clark Hull • All motives are from the basic biological needs

  7. Incentive theory • Focus on the role of environment • Incentive - object we seek or result attempting to achieve • IE- Reinforcers, goals, rewards • Gain positive incentives, avoid negative incentives

  8. Cognitive theory • Extrinsicmotivation- reduce biological needs or obtain incentives • Intrinsicmotivation- activities are personally rewarding, fulfill our beliefs or expectations • Over justification- giving more extrinsic motivation that necessary, intrinsic motivation declines
