Question 2 How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
For all three of my final products, I have used the title ‘Industrial Bites’ on every product that I have made. The reason why this was done is so that viewers can easily associate all three products together making it easier for them to know when the documentary will be aired and allowing them to know what to look for. For our documentary, the title appeared in our title sequence as an animated title opening which connoted the idea of food. For the radio trailer, the narrator provided the audience with the name of the documentary at the end of the trailer which was provided along with the time and date that the documentary would be aired. Finally, for the print advert, the title was placed in the top left corner so that it would still look bold and easy to read but wouldn't disrupt the effect of the main image. Not only is the title an important feature in distributing important information for the reader but it also helps to represent the theme of the documentary
The topic of our documentary was how food sells in the industry which is why we decided upon Industrial Bites as this shows how it's apart of the industry as well as the bites connoting the idea of it being about food. Just like many other professional documentaries such as Supersize Me, they all use a title that connotes the topic of the overall documentary as the audience have an idea about what the programme will be about without having to look up further information about the documentary. This was an important conventional code that we knew had to be followed in order to anchor the meaning of our product, making it look more professional and suitable to be aired on BBC One
For both Documentary and Radio Trailer, we used the same person to narrate both products as this allows the audience to associate both products together because they hear the same voice which helps to strengthen the products as there is an obvious link between both. For both Radio Trailer and Print Advert, we ensured that the name of the channel was continuously used so that the audience would be able to note what channel the documentary would be broadcasted on. We decided to use BBC One and used the logo on the Print Advert as well as verbally mentioning it in the Radio Trailer towards the end. This again strengthens the two products as the link between both is clear and informative for the viewer. We also made sure that any scheduling information was the same for all products as this was an important feature in bringing the viewers as it needed to be continuous throughout so that the information would allow the audience to watch our documentary
Another way in which we provided a strong link between products was through the use of sound bites taken from interviews in our documentary. The clips were played in our radio trailer as a way of providing the audience with an insight into what our documentary will be about, giving them more of a reason to want to watch it when it is aired. However, it doesn't just provide the audience with a sneak peek of what's to come but also makes the audio more recognizable which will then answer any questions they may have after listening to the Radio Trailer as they will remember the clips they heard when watching the documentary
For our Radio Trailer, we also used a song in the background that also connoted the topic of food in our documentary as we chose Be Our Guest as we thought it was relevant and catchy enough to make the audience remember the trailer as it is a popular song that everyone knows. However, we made sure that the song was not too overpowering as this would take away from the products itself which would be bad as the audience would then not take in the information being given to them
Our documentary is an informative documentary and this is shown through our Print Advert. This is because we used a bold image that connotes each topic that is brought up in our documentary as well as being eye catching. The use of colour splash is also informative as the centre images are in colour with the rest being in black and white which highlights the importance of the images
