Today’s Focus: Curriculum Map - content area Some History… 2007: Technology standards were mapped to K-12 curriculum 2007: Essential Standards & Tier II Assessments 2005: Curriculum Mapping (some contents)http://www2.shelllake.k12.wi.us/District/district-documents/curriculum/index.html 1998: Math & LA standards aligned across curriculum (revised in 2004 & 2006)
Curriculum Mapping vs. Standards Alignment • (TODAY’S TASK)Curriculum Map:An outline of all content (skills) taught to students, including resources used, assessments, and standards. • (NOT TODAY’s TASK)Standards Alignment:aligning curriculum taught to meet the Wisconsin State Standards. Note: PART of today’s task may include listing standards met. However, today is not to look at all the standards to ensure your curriculum meets them.
Curriculum vs. Textbook • Curriculum: Course of study; what is taught in the classroom; a plan of skills, lessons and objectives an educator executes. • Textbook: A resource an educator uses to teach the curriculum. A few statements of support… “Just because it’s in your textbook, doesn’t mean you need to teach it.” “If it isn’t in your textbook, but needs to be taught, it’s okay to teach it using a different resource.” “Your textbook is not your curriculum.” “Your curriculum is not your textbook.”
Rationale for today… Documentation of Curriculum being taught. “The District’s road maps” Step #1 of a Scope-n-Sequence vision ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Vision for future:Step #2: Gaps and overlaps leading to curriculum revisionStep #3: Aligning revised curriculum to standards; completing entire map This is an on-going process. Always.
