Week Two Standard ELA9RL5 The student understands and acquires new vocabulary and uses it correctly in reading and writing. The student uses knowledge of Greek and Latin prefixes, suffixes, and roots to understand the meanings of words.
HOSP/HOST comes from the Latin word hospes and its stem hospit- meaning both “host” and “guest”
hostage (n.) a person given or held to ensure that an agreement, demand, or treaty is kept or fulfilled
hospice – (n.) a place or program to help care for the terminally ill
hostel – (n.) an inexpensive, supervised place for young travelers to stay overnight
inhospitable – (adj.) not welcoming or generous; unfriendly
AM/IM comes from the Latin word amare, “to love”
amicable – (adj.) friendly, peaceful
enamored – (v.) charmed or fascinated; inflamed with love
inimical – (adj.) hostile, unfriendly, harmful
paramour – (adj.) a lover, often secret, not allowed by law or custom
