Pay Attention to…. The timeline 1927-1937 & 1946-1949. What happened in-between?
Long-Term Causes Socio-economic factors Peasants lived a hard life. Worked hard, paid large taxes, barely survived. Political Weakness/ForeignInfluence (Essay #1) European Imperialist Powers/Japan Unequal treaties, loss of territory, flood of Christianity, etc. Eventually loss of sovereignty. Overthrowing the Dynasty system Politically unstable- trying a new form of government Revolution was incomplete- no real democracy, many old leaders kept positions of power
Short-Term Causes Regionalism Warlords held considerable power. May 4th Movement In 1919 students demonstrated against traditional Chinese culture, Japan, and, the warlords Sparked the wave of patriotism CCP and GMD Who will lead China? What were the different strategies/tactics they used?
Other Items to Consider GMD attacking the CCP Why was their alliance over? Why did the GMD initially allow communists in their organization? The Long March Over 80,000 of original 90,000 died Solidified Mao as leader of a very small, dedicated group of fanatical revolutionaries Why was Mao so successful? Guerrilla warfare (extremely successful) GMD errors- treated peasants poorly, fought CCP before Japan, Failure of 3 Principles of the People- nationalism, democracy, &the livelihood of the people
1946-1949 Why did CCP win? Initially GMD had advantage- troops, equipment, etc. Ceasefire called by USA gave CCP time to train troops Better war tactics Mao Intelligence- Chiang Kaishek’s assistant Chief of Staff & head of GMD War Planning Board were CCP spies. Spread of Communist Ideas- popular opinion, especially in struggling rural areas.
