Today’s Agenda: Section 1.2.3 What are we learning today? Rotating objects clockwise and counter-clockwise a specific number of degrees Why does it matter? Building any object that has a part that turns, flips, or slides in a set direction
Rotating with see-through paper • Trace original figure and point of rotation • Put pencil on point of rotation and turn • If rotating 90o, 180o, or 270o put a + over the point of rotation see 90o turns • If it doesn’t specify, rotate counter-clockwise
Special Rotations about theorigin • Rotating 180o about the origin (0,0): same numbers with opposite signs • Example: R(-2, -4) R’(2, 4) • Rotating 90o about the origin: • Numbers flip • Moves 1 quadrant – use signs for new quadrant • Example: rotate T(-5, 3) 90o clockwise • Moves from Q2 to Q1 (+, +) • T’ (3, 5)
Rotations in regular polygons • A Regular polygon has equal side lengths and equal angle measures • When a regular polygon has been “pizza sliced”, all the central angles are equal • Central angle = 3600 / # of sides • If you rotate the regular polygon by a multiple of the central angle the polygon maps onto itself
Example How many degrees would you have to rotate the pentagon, about X, to map V onto S?
Your classwork tasks • As a class: practice worksheet #1, 3, 5, 9, 15, and 18 • In your pairs: finish the worksheet (don’t use tracing paper) • On your own: textbook pg 37 #69, 70ab, and 71 (use tracing paper)
