G o d l y C h u r c h In A WORLDLY World MATERIALISM Part 1
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Introduction -Disciples of the Lord have had a constant struggle with worldly desires hindering their faith in the Lord(Matt 19:16-22) -A large portion of the NT has been devoted to the subject of materialism -Materialism is defined as "a great or excessive regard for worldly concerns." -Half of Jesus sayings have to do with worldly wealth in one way or another (Matt. 6:24)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Introduction -The devil uses several tools against God’s people, but materialism is the most frequently used (Luke 8:14) -Especially in America do we find ourselves pushing the line for what is materialistic -Understanding and dealing with materialism is in reality a “first principle” -Most people, when this type of subject is preached become uneasy and even upset
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Materialism And Its Problems -The Poor Are No Better Than The Rich -A lesson like this calls for priority, not poverty -We are not called to have an ascetic religion (poverty based on faith) -The poor may be as, or more materialistic than the rich, always desiring the things of the world and striving for them, not keeping their eyes on heaven.
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Materialism And Its Problems -The Rich Are No Better Than The Poor -Wealth can keep a close relationship between man and God (Job. 34:19-21) -Some think that wealth is given because of one’s righteousness, and this is not so -It could easily be said, that someone is “struck” with riches (Psalm 73:12)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Materialism And Its Problems -Rich/Poor Need To Avoid Covetousness -Materialism is in essence covetousness, when you consider its desires -Covetousness leads to being discontented (Hebrews 13:5) -Covetousness leads to jealousy and envy (James 3:14-16)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Materialism And The Sin Of Covetousness -Covetousness Is A Major Problem -Christians need to avoid covetousness, that it might not be named among them (Eph. 5:3) -Covetousness is very similar to idolatry (Eph. 5:5; Col. 3:5) -Covetousness for material things is cause for withdrawal from the church and will keep us out of heaven (I Cor. 5:11; 6:9, 10)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Materialism And The Sin Of Covetousness -Coveting Material Things Is An Addiction -No matter how much the covetous gain, they always seem to want more -Solomon, who had much, thought it vanity to love material things (Eccl. 5:10) -God knows what we “need” , and we need to separate the “needs” from our “wants” (Eccl. 5:12; Matt. 6:8)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- The Issue With Coveting Material Things -Wealth Is Not Wrong Within Itself -Wealth becomes a problem when we make it a problem -We cannot love material wealth in letting it hinder our spiritual life (I Tim. 6:6-10; Prov. 11:28) -We need to live within our means, and accept what God blesses us with (Phil. 4:11-13; Prov. 30:8-9)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- The Issue With Coveting Material Things -Wealth Is Not Wrong Within Itself -Selfishness. The primary motivation of the materialistic person is to satisfy self.-Excessiveness. The materialistic person pursues material ends at the expense of spiritual priorities, upsetting the proper balance and proportion God intends our lives to have. -Nobody ever thinks his own material pursuits are either selfish or excessive.
-M A T E R I A L I S M- The Issue With Coveting Material Things -We Need A Rich Faith, Not Just Riches -It is difficult for a rich (wealthy) man to enter into heaven (Matthew 19:23, 24) -The Lord knows whether we are rich in faith (Rev. 2:9; 3:17) -We must prioritize our lives with our wealth so that we can be right with God (Luke 12:13-21; I Tim. 6:17; Matt 6:21)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- The Issue With Coveting Material Things -We Cannot Shirk Our Spiritual Duties -Some people are not giving as they have prospered (I Cor. 16:1-2) -We need to be careful not to give the “Giver” the leftovers of our blessings (James 1:17) -Let us find joy in giving to the Lord and doing good unto all men with our blessings (II Cor. 9:6-15)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- APPLICATION -Many lives have been destroyed because of a materialistic lifestyle (John 12:6) -The Lord recognizes a truly rich person (Mark 12:43-44) -Some people can’t wait until God’s work ceases, so they can return to their daily money making endeavors (Amos 8:5)
-M A T E R I A L I S M- Are You Rich…In Faith? -Hear John 12:48 -Believe John 8:24 -Repent Luke 13:3, 5 -Confess Matthew 10:32-33 -Baptized Mark 16:16 -Faithful Rev. 2:10
